Stanley Turrentine, ein Veteran des Souljazz, wird auf „Sugar" von der Creme de la Creme der Grooveszene begleitet, unter anderem von George Benson, Lonnie Liston Smith, Freddie Hubbard und Ron Carter. Er entzieht sich bei dieser LP aber den üblichen Schablonen, seine hochrangigen Musiker erweisen sich dabei als sehr hilfreich. Bereits das Titelstück ist ein Meisterwerk des Soulblues mit einem schwingenden Offbeat. Die Rhythmusgruppe bleibt schön im Fluss, während Benson, Hubbard und Turrentine langsam beginnen, das Tempo zu erhöhen. Butch Cornells „Sunshine Alley" ist ein funky-grooviges Stück, Schrittmacher ist hier vor allem die Orgel. Turrentine und Hubbard übernehmen die Melodie und improvisieren herrlich, mit zunehmender Geschwindigkeit. Ein starke Nummer ist Coltranes „Impressions": Turrentine erweist sich hier mit seinem eindrucksvollen, modalen Spiel als Meister seines Fachs, während Benson und Smith feine virtuose, aber nie unharmonische Sets hinlegten. Nicht nur für Turrentine-Fans ein heißer Tipp!
